John Legend Drops “Muse”: A Pharrell-Produced Reinvention With Clipse in the Mix

ASN NEWS USA — SPECIAL REPORT

LOS ANGELES (ASN NEWS USA)— John Legend is not resting on the ballads that made him a household name. The EGOT-winning singer released his new album, “Muse,” on Friday, October 23, via Republic Records — a 16-track project produced in full and co-written by Pharrell Williams.

This is the first full album the two longtime friends have ever made together, more than 20 years into their friendship. The project grew out of Legend’s appearance on Clipse’s “The Birds Don’t Sing,” from the Pharrell-produced album “Let God Sort ‘Em Out.” That performance convinced Pharrell to build an entire album around Legend’s voice, and the pair recorded much of “Muse” at Pharrell’s studio inside Louis Vuitton’s Paris headquarters in early 2025.

The sound is a deliberate shake-up. Legend described the vision as having a “Black James Bond” feel — gospel, soul, doo-wop, Afrobeats, and hip-hop, with strings, horns, and 808s anchoring the arrangements. The album follows one relationship through desire, commitment, and betrayal.

The release arrived with a black-and-white video for “Bodies On The Floor,” featuring Clipse, directed by Paul Hunter. Legend performs at the piano as a story of two lovers caught in a cycle of hurt and reconciliation plays out around him, with Clipse stepping in to deliver their verses.

Legend said it plainly: he wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new. After two decades of hits, “Muse” is the sound of an artist refusing to stand still — and of Black musical tradition, from Nina Simone to Marvin Gaye, running straight through the center of it.
