ASN NEWS USA — SPECIAL REPORT
PARIS (ASN NEWS USA)— France is bracing for another weekend of protests, and the government is answering with one of the largest security mobilizations in recent memory.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has mobilized 70,000 police and security forces nationwide for Saturday’s demonstrations — 10,000 more than were deployed on October 17, when a wave of vandalism and looting on the sidelines of protests raised sharp questions about the government’s ability to maintain order.
Why the Streets Are Full
The protests began with high school students demonstrating over learning conditions and have since spread nationwide, fueled by broader anger over the rising cost of living and strained public services. Student unions, labor groups, and the Yellow Vest movement plan to march through central Paris and other cities on Saturday.
More than 500,000 people took to the streets last Saturday, according to reports, and the demonstrations were marred by violence and looting. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said 217 people have already been jailed over last weekend’s events, and 2,700 taken into police custody.
Nunez warned officers to be “hyper-reactive” against troublemakers and looters, saying, “We are ready tomorrow to be extremely firm and not tolerate anything.” The Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, and 24 Metro stations are set to close on Saturday, and luxury stores near Place Vendôme have boarded up windows and added private security.
The Political Stakes
The unrest lands six months ahead of elections to replace President Macron, with new polling showing far-right leader Marine Le Pen as the frontrunner. Le Pen is due to host her National Rally party congress in Orléans this weekend, adding another flashpoint to an already tense Saturday.
Macron met with student representatives on Friday, but they emerged urging students to keep protesting until the government puts forward concrete proposals.
