Passengers Storm Cockpit, Foil Mid-Air Attack on Flydubai Flight to Tel Aviv

ASN NEWS USA — NEWS FLASH

TABUK, SAUDI ARABIA (ASN NEWS USA)— A routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a mid-air nightmare on September 30, when the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and tried to bring the plane down.

Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying about 174 passengers — most of them Israeli — and crew, plunged more than 14,000 feet in under two minutes over Saudi Arabia after the struggle began inside the cockpit. The wounded captain, Smit Machchhar, used his remaining strength to unlock the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members — including Israeli plumber Yaniv Hayun — stormed in, overpowered the attacker, and helped stabilize the aircraft.

The plane diverted safely to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Captain Machchhar was reported stable after surgery. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the captain and the intervening passengers as heroes. Saudi authorities arrested the Omani co-pilot, and Flydubai suspended its Israel flights while the investigation continues.

Security Questions on Routes Linking the Gulf and Israel

The incident has raised urgent questions about cockpit security on routes connecting the Gulf states and Israel — flights that only exist because of recent normalization. Investigators are now digging into how the attack unfolded and what protocols failed. One thing is clear: ordinary passengers and crew prevented a catastrophe at 30,000 feet.
