WASHINGTON (ASN NEWS USA)— President Donald Trump is calling it fake news — and this time the fight is over Iran.

Trump took to Truth Social on Monday to deny a report by Axios claiming he offered Iran sanctions relief and access to frozen funds in exchange for concessions on Tehran’s nuclear program. His words: “This is untrue. I offered them NOTHING!” He branded the story a “HOAX” and demanded Axios withdraw it immediately.

The Axios report, which also ran in Hebrew on Israel’s Channel 12, cited unnamed U.S. officials saying Trump was willing to ease sanctions and release Iranian funds for “concrete” Iranian steps on the nuclear issue. CNN carried a similar report from its own unnamed official.

But here’s the bigger picture: U.S. and Iranian officials held separate talks with Qatari mediators on Monday in a renewed push to end seven months of war. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran expects an American response to its latest ceasefire proposal, which would reopen the Strait of Hormuz — the shipping chokepoint carrying a fifth of the world’s crude — in exchange for unfrozen assets and lifted sanctions.

So somebody’s talking to somebody. The question is who’s telling the truth — the unnamed officials, or the President?
