Cardi B and Kehlani’s “Safe” won Best Hip-Hop at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, making it the first all-female collaboration ever to take home the category. The two Queens beat out a heavyweight field: Drake, Megan Thee Stallion, Travis Scott, Tyler, The Creator, and Don Toliver.

Let that sink in. In a category that has historically belonged to the fellas, two Black women linked up and took the Moon Person straight home. That’s not just a win — that’s a statement.

The ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, also crowned Madonna Artist of the Year, Taylor Swift Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” and BTS Song of the Year for “Swim.” But make no mistake: the culture was watching the Best Hip-Hop line, and the culture showed up.

Cardi and Kehlani proved what the streets already knew — when women in hip-hop unite instead of divide, nobody can stop them. The era of the female emcee running hip-hop isn’t coming. It’s here.
