DETROIT (ASN NEWS USA)— Detroit techno has lost one of its founding fathers. Juan Atkins, the producer and DJ widely known as the godfather of techno, has died at 64, his management company Greensmith Artists confirmed on November 1.

Atkins was in Mexico City ahead of a scheduled performance at YuYu Cine Club on October 31. His agency told Resident Advisor he was found unresponsive in his hotel room and pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital. No cause of death has been announced.

The sound he built

Born in Detroit in 1962, Atkins formed Cybotron with Richard Davis in 1980 and, alongside school friends Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson — the Belleville Three — built the sound that became Detroit techno. In 1985 he launched Metroplex Records and released “No UFOs” as Model 500, one of the genre’s defining records. His 1988 track “Techno Music” helped cement the name of the music itself.

From Detroit clubs to festival stages in New York and Berlin, including Detroit’s Movement Festival, Atkins stayed an active touring performer right to the end. He had appeared in Amsterdam on October 23 as part of Four Decades of Detroit Techno.

A legacy that outlives the dance floor

Techno is now a global sound, played on every continent. It started with a young Black musician in Detroit imagining the future through synthesizers and drum machines — and the world is still dancing to what he heard first. Tributes from across the Detroit music community poured in within hours of the news.
