Universal Music Group Cuts Staff as Top Executives Exit

ASN NEWS USA — SPECIAL REPORT

NEW YORK (ASN NEWS USA)—

Universal Music Group — the biggest machine in the music business — swung the axe earlier this month. According to Variety, UMG laid off workers across its U.S. and U.K. operations, with multiple top executives out the door alongside “many others.”

Let’s call this what it is: corporate consolidation dressed up as strategy. The names hitting the exit list tell the story. Def Jam Chairman-CEO Tunji Balogun, Republic Records Chairman and Co-CEO Jim Roppo, Interscope executives Sam Riback and Nicole Wyskoarko — these are people who shaped the sound of Black music in America for years. And 27-year company veteran Rebecca Allen is stepping down as Chief Artist and Strategy Officer barely months after being promoted.

Meanwhile, UMG’s own statement talks about “greater efficiency” and “new skills and technology” — the same boardroom poetry that always means fewer jobs. And get this: the company pulled in nearly $7.2 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026. This isn’t survival. It’s squeezing more out of less.

The cuts continue a process announced back in January 2024, and they hit London too, with Polydor Label Group chief Ben Mortimer stepping down and a dozen jobs already gone in Canada.

When the biggest label on earth starts cutting the culture-makers who built it, pay attention. The music doesn’t stop — but the people who made it matter are being shown the door.
