Trump Singles Out Norway Over Nobel Snub: “I Don’t Want Anybody From Norway”

PORT HURON, MICHIGAN (ASN NEWS USA)— With the midterm elections just over a week away, President Donald Trump used a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday to turn a personal grievance into a headline — aimed at an entire country.

Trump told the crowd that Norwegian immigrants are not welcome in the United States because the Nobel committee, based in Oslo, has not awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize. His blunt explanation, as reported by Reuters: “because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway.”

He also used a vulgar insult to describe Norway — a term Reuters notes he has previously applied to Haiti, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen. Earlier this month, Trump called the failure to give him the prize an “indelible stain” on Norway.

Here is what matters, and what does not: Reuters reports there is no indication the administration is adopting a new official policy on Norwegian immigrants. This was a campaign-rally remark, not a government announcement from a podium.

Still, the moment lands. A president tying his view of a whole nation to a prize decision — days before voters head to the polls on November 3 — says plenty about where this campaign’s closing argument is headed.
