Jordan Strikes Southern Syria After Church Attack That Killed Nine; Three Suspects Arrested

ASN NEWS USA — NEWS FLASH

AMMAN, JORDAN (ASN NEWS USA) — Jordan’s air force struck what it described as militant hideouts in southern Syria on Monday, days after gunmen opened fire inside a church in the Karak governorate, killing nine people and wounding 40 others.

Jordan said it carried out the strikes after determining that the attackers behind last week’s deadly church attack were linked to “terrorist groups” operating in southern Syria. Reuters reported there was no immediate comment from Syrian authorities, and it was not clear whether the strikes were coordinated with Damascus.

The attack itself happened on Friday, when gunmen opened fire inside a church in the village of Hamoud in Karak governorate, according to Jordanian state television and the Public Security Directorate. Nine people were killed and 40 wounded.

On Monday, Jordanian security forces arrested three suspects over the attack, state television reported. The suspects were found hiding in an abandoned house, refused to surrender and opened fire on security forces, who returned fire and arrested all three after they were wounded. No security personnel were injured, and firearms and ammunition were seized.

Jordan’s interior minister said on Friday the attack was carried out by extremists, but it was too early to determine whether they had links to known groups inside or outside Jordan. No group has claimed responsibility, and the Public Security Directorate’s statement did not identify the suspects’ affiliation.

The strikes raise urgent questions for a region already on edge: who ordered the church attack, what links the attackers had across the border, and whether Jordan’s response will calm the crisis — or widen it.
