HEBRON (ASN NEWS USA)— At least five people were wounded — two in critical condition — after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint Friday, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order the closure of the occupied West Bank.

Both gunmen were shot and killed by Israeli forces, the IDF said, as searches continued for anyone else connected to the attack. The military imposed a “full siege” on the city of Hebron. Netanyahu ordered the IDF to prepare for a full West Bank closure starting Friday, though it remains unclear exactly when it begins or how long it lasts.

Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service said two of the wounded are in critical condition. Videos from the scene showed a firefight lasting several minutes, with repeated bursts of gunfire; one Reuters video captured a responder saying the shooting had gone on for at least 20 minutes.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said soldiers recovered a vehicle used by the gunmen filled with “a large quantity” of ammunition. “This was a serious terror attack,” Zamir said. “The fighters’ rapid action prevented an even more serious attack.”

The attack comes just four days before Israel holds elections for the first time since October 7, 2023.
