BEND, Ore. (ASN NEWS USA)—
A 16-year-old Bend resident opened fire inside Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday afternoon, killing three children and a teacher before a community member stopped him, police said.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the gunman forced his way into the locked-down school by shooting at the locked doors. The children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11; the teacher was 54. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to an area hospital.
The first 911 call came just before 1 p.m. from a driver outside the school who said he had been shot at by someone carrying a long gun. More calls flooded in from inside the school, and officers arrived within minutes to find the gunman dead.
Krantz said a community member saw the teen entering the school around 1 p.m., followed him inside, and engaged him in gunfire before police arrived.
The attacker used a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the shooting who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Police have not released the shooter’s identity, said they do not know if he had any connection to the school, and have established no motive. The FBI is assisting the investigation.
The shooting is the 36th shooting on K-12 school grounds this year, according to a CNN analysis of Gun Violence Archive, Education Week and Everytown for Gun Safety data. Silver Rail Elementary serves kindergarten through fifth grade and had 459 enrolled students last year.
