NEW YORK (ASN NEWS USA)— The streets outside a Bronx hospital turned into a flashpoint Thursday night after a federal immigration agent shot a man in the neck during an enforcement operation hours earlier.
About 300 demonstrators massed outside NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where the wounded man is recovering, chanting “We want ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace.” Tensions boiled over as protesters and police grappled over barricades, pushing back and forth in the streets near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue — the same Marble Hill neighborhood where the shooting happened Thursday morning.
The man was shot during an ICE operation and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. A 5-year-old child who was in the vehicle with him was unharmed. The NYPD confirmed that none of its officers were involved in the shooting.
The shooting has poured fuel on the city’s already heated fight over immigration enforcement. For the protesters who stood their ground outside that hospital Thursday night, the message was one line, shouted over and over: get ICE off our streets.
