FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. (ASN NEWS USA)— A search for a missing swimmer off Long Island is expected to resume Sunday as a deadly nor’easter continues battering the East Coast.

The swimmer was last seen in the ocean near Field 3 at Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island’s western tip around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, according to New York State Police. He was described as a white male wearing dark-colored shorts. When he disappeared from view and did not exit the water, officials launched a search.

Search crews suspended operations Saturday evening because of darkness, and were expected to relaunch Sunday, according to reports.

The storm brought punishing conditions: waves averaged 18 feet, with sea levels estimated between 15 and 20 feet and swells reaching 25 feet at times, the National Weather Service said. Winds averaged 35 to 45 mph, with gusts topping 60 mph. Hazardous water conditions were posted for the park Saturday afternoon.

Long Island, New York City, and parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and Massachusetts have been under storm and coastal flood warnings.

Police are asking the public for help identifying anyone who may have been in the area Saturday afternoon and cannot be located.
