NEW YORK CITY (ASN NEWS USA) — The East Coast is getting hammered by a beast of a storm — a powerful, rare September nor’easter packing wind gusts up to 55 mph, dangerous coastal flooding, and the kind of downpours that turn streets into rivers.

Meteorologists say only about 1% of nor’easters form this early in the season. This one is battering the coast from Virginia to Maine, with the National Weather Service issuing wind advisories and coastal flood warnings from New York City through Long Island, New Jersey, and up into Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

In Massachusetts, Cape Cod could see gusts hitting 60 mph and 4 to 6 inches of rain. New Jersey’s coast is staring down 6-to-12-foot waves, beach erosion, and life-threatening rip currents. New York City officials are warning of basement flooding, power outages, and travel snarls.

The storm is already upending travel: the FAA says flights at all three major New York-area airports could be disrupted, with American Airlines, JetBlue, and United waiving change fees. Amtrak warned its Northeast service could take a hit.

Utilities are bracing for widespread outages — trees still carry full leaves, which catch the wind and make them far more likely to come down on power lines.

If you’re on the East Coast: charge your devices, stay off flooded roads, and keep clear of the shoreline. This storm isn’t playing around.
