NYC MAYOR CONCEDES LACK OF AUTHORITY TO EXECUTE ICC WARRANT FOR NETANYAHU

NEW YORK (ASN NEWS USA)— New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani conceded publicly that his administration lacks the independent legal authority to order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, marking a significant legal retreat from a high-profile campaign pledge.
The admission follows intense political debate after Mamdani revealed that city officials were in active consultations with the New York City Law Department to determine if the New York Police Department could legally execute an outstanding International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant during Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to the United Nations General Assembly in September.
“Following a comprehensive review by our legal team, it is clear that local law enforcement does not possess the jurisdiction or authorization to enforce international warrants of this nature,” Mamdani said in a video statement released on social media.
Mamdani had previously made the potential arrest a cornerstone of his executive foreign policy rhetoric, citing the ICC warrant issued for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Despite the legal limitation, Mamdani doubled down on his rhetoric, calling the Israeli prime minister a “war criminal” and stating firmly that Netanyahu is “not welcome in New York City”.
However, legal experts and federal authorities noted that state and local government entities do not possess the jurisdiction to enforce actions on behalf of the ICC, a body the United States is not a party to. Furthermore, visiting foreign heads of state under the auspices of the United Nations are shielded by sweeping federal diplomatic immunity frameworks.
The administration’s public posturing drew swift rebuke from both domestic and international officials. Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the U.N., issued a sharp public response telling the mayor “enough” and accusing him of spreading propaganda rather than focusing on municipal governance.
President Donald Trump also addressed the controversy, stating firmly in a social media post that Netanyahu “will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America”.
The legal clarification effectively ends the municipal push for local intervention ahead of the General Assembly, though Mamdani has shifted his focus to urging the federal government to join the ICC and enforce the warrant independently.(ASN)
