ASN NEWS USA — NEWS FLASHVATICAN CITY (ASN NEWS USA)— The Vatican confirmed Tuesday that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer, after surgeons at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital removed the lower lobe of his right lung in an operation that officials say was successful. The Holy See Press Office said the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma — the most common form of lung cancer — was confirmed during the surgery itself, as preoperative tests had suggested. The pontiff was in the operating room for roughly three hours, with the surgery lasting about 90 minutes, and the Vatican reported “no complications.” Doctors are believed to have removed all cancerous tissue, though no mention was made of further treatment. The 71-year-old pope had revealed the discovery himself on Sunday, telling pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square that doctors found a “well-contained” localized nodule and that he was entrusting himself to their prayers. The Vatican says Pope Leo spent a “peaceful night” in the hospital after the surgery and is expected to remain there for about a week. All public events through October 20 have been cancelled. His planned November 6–17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru remains on the schedule.Leo, elected in May 2025, is the first U.S.-born pope in history and has been known for his active lifestyle, including regular tennis.Stay tuned to ASN News USA for updates on this developing story.
