ASN NEWS USA — SPECIAL REPORT
HARLEM, NEW YORK (ASN NEWS USA)— The smoothest voice in R&B has gone silent. Grammy-nominated soul legend Freddie Jackson has died at 70, just three days after his birthday. His family announced the news October 6 on his official Instagram, with no cause of death given.
From the church house to the charts.Born in Harlem and raised singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church, Jackson carried the soul of the church into every love song he ever recorded. After cutting his teeth with the funk band Mystic Merlin and singing backup for Melba Moore, his 1985 debut Rock Me Tonight went platinum — and made him a fixture of Black radio for a decade.
A soundtrack for the culture.”Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake).” “You Are My Lady.” “Jam Tonight.” “Do Me Again.” These weren’t just hits — they were the slow-jam soundtracks of cookouts, weddings, and quiet nights across Black America. Two Grammy nominations. Multiple platinum records. A voice you knew in three notes.
Jackson revealed in 2024 that he was battling kidney disease, partnering with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness. His family’s statement said it best: “For decades he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories, our celebrations, and our most treasured memories. That gift will live on forever.”
