WASHINGTON (ASN NEWS USA)— President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest ceasefire proposal on Saturday, even as he signaled Sunday that negotiations between the two countries would continue this week.

The Iranian proposal, presented at last week’s United Nations General Assembly and conveyed through Qatari mediators, would have reopened the Strait of Hormuz within a week and resumed nuclear talks if the United States lifted its naval blockade, waived sanctions on Iranian oil, and unfroze assets. Trump called the deal “unacceptable.”

“I reject their proposal,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. He told Axios on Sunday: “I expect more talks with Iran [this week]. They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make. It is what we would have maybe agreed to a year ago. They overplayed their hand.”

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told CNN’s Jake Tapper that Trump rejected the offer because he does not believe Iran was negotiating in good faith, arguing Tehran was “asking for everything up front.”

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, said Iran is prepared for a “doomsday war” but prefers diplomacy — and said Tehran was still awaiting an official U.S. response through mediators.

The stakes extend to American wallets. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial artery for one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, and oil prices climbed Monday after the rejection, with Brent crude rising 1.8% to $106.2 a barrel.
